A simple, Markdown-inspired plain text formatting system for Arabic that fixes alignment issues using only three safe characters: ٠, ؛, and ؟.

New Way to Format Arabic Text

Formating Example

Formating (left-aligned) Arabic Text

  • The Goal: A new formatting style inspired by Markdown. It keeps Arabic text properly aligned and formatted when saved as a plain text (.txt) file.
  • The Problem: Arabic punctuation marks often flip or move to the wrong side of the sentence in plain text files.
  • The Solution: After testing, only three Arabic punctuation marks successfully stay in their correct places at the beginning or end of a sentence:
    1. The Arabic semicolon (؛)
    2. The Arabic question mark (؟)
    3. The Arabic (Indian) zero digit (٠)

How the System Works

  • Line Edges: Only use the three safe characters ( ؟ , ؛ , ٠ ) at the very beginning or very end of lines.
  • Colons: Replace standard colons (:) with an Arabic semicolon (؛).
  • Periods: Replace end-of-line periods with an empty space or an Arabic (Indian) zero (٠) if needed.
  • Question Marks: Use the Arabic question mark (؟) only for its normal job at the end of questions.
  • Middle Punctuation: Other punctuation marks can be used safely in the middle of sentences, but avoid brackets and parentheses like (), <>, {}, and []. Instead, use neutral marks like dashes (- -). If a dash accidentally ends up at the end of a line, put a zero (.) or arabic semicolon (؛) right after it.

Lists and Sections

  • Bullet Lists: Create lists manually by adding spaces and two semicolons at the start and end of each item.
    • Example: ; ; First item ; ; then ; ; Second item ; ;
  • Section Dividers: Separate different sections using either three zeros (000) or three semicolons (;;;). The semicolons work best.
  • Headings: Show heading levels by adding matching numbers of zeros (0) at the beginning.
    • ٠ = Main title
    • ٠٠ = Subtitle
    • ٠٠٠ = Sub-sub-title

Final Thought

This method is enough to show the structure of a text clearly. Because of this, bold text, italics, and underlined text are not essentially needed. Anyone who wants them, or other extra styling, they might borrow the way from Markdown.

The following is an Arabic translation of this article, which would better show the examlpes.
